The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution condemning Israel’s settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The United States abstained on the resolution, allowing it to pass, rather than vetoing it. This was a major diplomatic defeat for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Security Council reaffirmed its determination that the West Bank and East Jerusalem are occupied territory and that Israeli settlements there “have no legal validity”.
